The Sun is part of everyday life, yet few students get the chance to observe it through a telescope. At the University of Southern Punjab (USP) in Multan, Pakistan, that opportunity transformed a familiar sight into a fascinating scientific discovery.

Jointly organized by USP’s Departments of Physics and Chemistry and the Multan Astronomy Society (MAST), the seminar “Life Cycle of a Star: The Sun as a Case Study, Its Structure, Solar Activity, and Sunspots” brought astronomy to life at Jinnah Auditorium on October 25, 2026.

The highlight was a live solar observation, allowing students to view the Sun through a specially equipped telescope with appropriate safety precautions. The experience took learning beyond textbooks, bringing our nearest star into direct view.

Delivering the keynote address, Engr. Muhammad Kashif guided participants through the Sun’s 4.6-billion-year history, explaining how it formed, how it works, what causes sunspots and solar activity, and how it will evolve in the distant future.

Prof. Emeritus Dr. Muhammad Mukhtar, Rector of USP; Prof. Dr. Zahid Chohan, Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences; and Prof. Dr. Misbah ul Islam, Head of the Department of Physics, attended the seminar.

The event reflects USP’s commitment to making science engaging, practical, and accessible. By combining expert knowledge with hands-on observation, the university encouraged students to question, explore, and appreciate the scientific forces shaping our world.

The seminar reflected the University of Southern Punjab’s commitment to experiential learning, scientific inquiry, and inspiring young minds through discovery. By bringing students face-to-face with the wonders of the Sun, USP transformed scientific knowledge into a memorable experience, encouraging them to look beyond textbooks and explore the universe’s mysteries. At USP, every discovery begins with curiosity—and every curious mind holds the promise of a brighter future.

The collaboration between the two departments and MAST also underscored the value of academic partnerships in promoting scientific awareness and nurturing future researchers.
