The University of Southern Punjab (USP), Multan, Pakistan, celebrated Air Traffic Control (ATC) Day on October 20 with an engaging, informative activity organized by its Department of Aviation Management. The event highlighted aviation's historical evolution, the indispensable role of air traffic controllers in flight safety, and the importance of effective communication between pilots and air traffic control personnel.
Mr. Ali Imran, Joint Director, ATS, Multan Airport, attended the event as the chief guest and delivered an insightful address on aviation history and the evolution of air traffic control systems. He explained that the growth of air travel has made air traffic controllers essential to the safe, orderly, and efficient movement of aircraft in increasingly complex airspace.
Emphasizing air traffic controllers' responsibilities, Mr. Ali Imran highlighted their crucial role in coordinating aircraft movements, guiding pilots through changing flight conditions, managing traffic during takeoff and landing, and maintaining continuous communication to prevent conflicts and ensure passenger safety. His address gave students valuable insight into the professional demands, technical expertise, and high level of responsibility associated with air traffic services.
A major highlight of the celebration was a simulated air traffic control exercise demonstrating aircraft landing procedures. The simulation illustrated how pilots and air traffic controllers exchange timely, precise instructions during the critical landing phase. It showed how controllers provide essential guidance, share relevant information, coordinate aircraft movements, and help pilots safely navigate to the runway. The activity helped students appreciate how clarity, coordination, situational awareness, and adherence to established procedures contribute to aviation safety.
The practical demonstration gave students a chance to connect classroom learning with real-world aviation operations. It also reinforced the importance of technical competence, quick decision-making, teamwork, and disciplined communication in the aviation industry.
The event underscored the University of Southern Punjab’s commitment to experiential learning and professional development. By connecting students with aviation professionals and practical simulations, the Department of Aviation Management offered a meaningful platform for understanding the operational realities of the aviation sector and the career opportunities in air traffic services and related fields.
Prof. Emeritus Dr. Muhammad Mukhtar, Rector of the University of Southern Punjab, praised the Department of Aviation Management for organizing this informative and professionally meaningful activity. He commended the department for creating opportunities that enrich students’ knowledge, strengthen practical understanding, and connect academic learning with industry practices.
The Rector emphasized that aviation safety depends on highly trained professionals, effective communication, technological competence, and an unwavering commitment to responsibility. He noted that air traffic controllers provide a vital service by helping pilots navigate aircraft safely, particularly during demanding phases such as approach and landing.
Mr. Saqib Nazir Ahmad, Director General/Registrar of the USP, also thanked Mr. Ali Imran, Joint Director, ATS, for sharing his professional experience and historical insights with the students. He encouraged the Department of Aviation Management to continue organizing such activities, expert interactions, and simulation-based learning to prepare graduates for the aviation industry's evolving needs.
The ATC Day celebration concluded with a renewed appreciation for the people working behind the scenes to keep air travel safe and efficient. The event underscored the University of Southern Punjab’s commitment to producing knowledgeable, skilled, industry-ready graduates through meaningful academic and professional engagement.
