The National Skills University Islamabad is organizing a seminar entitled The Lifeline of Communication- Amateur (Ham) Radio Vital Role in Emergencies, thus empowering youth to understand this time-tested technology's role in harsh climatic conditions. This seminar is part of the upcoming World Youth Skills Day 2024 (WYSD2024) celebrations on 15th July. This year's theme for the WYSD24 is "Youth Skills for Peace and Development." This seminar, which will demonstrate the skills required to operate an amateur radio, will be delivered by Mr. Asadullah Marwat, Vice President of the Pakistan Amateur Radio Society (PARS). Mr. Abdul Sattar Khokhar, Senior Joint Secretary (HEC), will be the Chief Guest of this session.

The need for Amateur Radio has increased, mainly due to continued climate issues. In the face of adversity, when torrential rains fall and floodwaters rise, a silent hero emerges from amateur radio, often affectionately known as "ham radio." In times of disaster, when conventional means of communication falter, the resilient network of ham radio operators stands as beacons of hope, bridging the gap between chaos and order.

According to Professor Dr. Muhammad Mukhtar, Vice Chancellor of the National Skills University Islamabad, the recent surge in extreme weather events, from devastating floods to ferocious storms, underscores the critical importance of reliable communication during emergencies. While modern technology has undoubtedly revolutionized our ability to connect instantaneously, it remains vulnerable to the unpredictable forces of nature. In these moments, when communication towers are toppled, and internet connections are severed, the ham radio shines as a beacon of reliability.

Unlike conventional communication systems that rely on centralized infrastructure, Ham radio operates independently, showcasing its unique feature. It is powered by the dedication and ingenuity of its enthusiasts. Equipped with only a radio transmitter and antenna, amateur operators form a decentralized network capable of remarkably efficiently spanning vast distances. In times of crisis, when every second counts, this grassroots network becomes a lifeline for those stranded amid disaster.

According to Prof. Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmad, Chairperson of Electrical Engineering Technology at the National Skills University Islamabad, the significance of Ham radio extends far beyond its utility in emergencies. For many enthusiasts, it is a passion that transcends mere hobbyism, a testament to the enduring spirit of human connection. However, in times of crisis, we must also recognize the urgent need for continued support and investment from the youth in this invaluable resource. From training programs to infrastructure development, ensuring the continued strength and accessibility of amateur radio is a necessity and a responsibility we all share in our collective resilience in the face of disaster.

As we navigate an increasingly uncertain world, let us not overlook the quiet, heroic technologies and associated skills that stand ready to serve in times of need. With their unwavering dedication and selflessness, Ham radio operators embody humanity's true spirit. They may not wear capes or wield superpowers, but their commitment to serving others in crisis is a beacon of hope, reminding us that even in our darkest hours, we are never truly alone.
