In a significant decision, the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) in Pakistan has discontinued the centralized examination system for grade 5 students in Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) FDE schools. This policy shift aims to ease exam-related stress and anxiety while eliminating undue student comparisons and competition. This decision was made during a meeting presided over by the Federal Secretary, Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training, Mr. Mohyuddin A Wani.

The current system of board examinations for fifth-grade students is drawing scrutiny for its unintended consequences on primary education. With teachers' attention and efforts heavily concentrated on preparing students for these pivotal exams, the overall quality of education in lower grades is suffering.

The move, endorsed after thoughtful deliberation, seeks to create a more nurturing environment where children can cultivate essential life skills and actively participate in sports without the burden of standardized testing, thereby fostering a more holistic development.

While centralized exams are being phased out, teachers' accountability will be upheld through ongoing summative internal diagnostic assessments. The focus remains steadfast on embracing a broader perspective of education that transcends mere examination performance.

"We firmly believe that education goes beyond exam pressures, especially during the formative years," stated a spokesperson. "Our aim is to ensure that schooling is a joyful and enriching experience."

To enrich student experiences, the FDE will introduce various co-curricular activities and non-assessed initiatives to promote holistic development, learning life skills and encourage exploration beyond conventional academic benchmarks. This holistic approach underscores a commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals poised for success in all aspects of life.
