Pakistan's Next Generation Reaches for the Stars as IST Concludes Landmark 10th Space Summer School

The Institute of Space Technology (IST) has successfully concluded the 10th Space Summer School (SSS 2026), marking a decade of inspiring young minds and strengthening Pakistan's growing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education ecosystem.
Organized by the Space Education Research Lab (SERL) at the National Center of GIS & Space Applications (NCGSA), the five-day program brought together 70 talented students from more than 30 schools across Pakistan for an immersive learning experience that combined scientific discovery with practical innovation. Participants explored astronomy, Earth observation, aviation, rocketry, satellite technology, space exploration, and emerging space applications through lectures by leading experts and hands-on STEM activities.
More than a summer camp, the program reflected Pakistan's growing commitment to cultivating scientific talent at an early age. Students were encouraged to think critically, solve real-world problems, and envision careers in space science, engineering, and advanced technologies that are increasingly shaping the global economy.
The 10th edition also marked a decade of remarkable achievements. Since its launch in 2017, the Space Summer School has inspired more than 3,000 students, engaged more than 550 schools and colleges, delivered more than 60 days of specialized space education, conducted more than 300 hours of learning and practical activities, offered 100-plus space-based STEM experiences, facilitated more than 200 hours of hands-on training, and brought together more than 250 distinguished national and international experts.
These milestones underscore the program's transformation from a modest educational initiative into one of Pakistan's most respected platforms for space education and public outreach. By exposing students to cutting-edge technologies and scientific inquiry, the program is helping to build a new generation of innovators equipped to contribute to Pakistan's future in the global space sector.
The organizers expressed their gratitude to the participating students, expert speakers, institutional partners, mentors, and the dedicated IST student volunteers, whose commitment and enthusiasm made the milestone edition a resounding success.
Prof. Dr. Muhammad Mukhtar, Rector of the University of Southern Punjab, Multan, congratulated the Institute of Space Technology, the Space Education Research Lab, and the National Center of GIS & Space Applications on the successful completion of the 10th Space Summer School. He described the initiative as one of Pakistan's finest examples of visionary STEM outreach, preparing young people for the challenges and opportunities of the space age.
"Investing in young minds through immersive scientific experiences is one of the most powerful ways to build a nation's future," Prof. Mukhtar said. "Programs such as the Space Summer School ignite curiosity, nurture innovation, and encourage students to dream beyond conventional boundaries. Pakistan needs more initiatives of this caliber to inspire future scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs, and technology leaders who will drive the country's knowledge economy."
Reflecting on his experience, Prof. Mukhtar noted that during 1995–1996 he had the privilege of helping establish the Summer Science@Jefferson program at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, which has since become one of the university's flagship initiatives for American high school students.
"Seeing the same passion, excitement, and intellectual curiosity among Pakistani students is deeply encouraging," he added. "The Institute of Space Technology deserves great appreciation for creating a program that not only introduces students to space science but also inspires them to believe they can contribute to humanity's next great discoveries."
