Hunan University of Medicine (HNUM) has inaugurated a new research building named in honor of the eminent Pakistani scientist Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary. This new building, which spans 13,000 square feet and will house 17 full-time researchers, is more than just a structure; instead, it symbolizes scientific collaboration and mutual respect between Pakistan and China.

Founded in 1912 by the visionary medical educator Mr. Yan Fuqing, HNUM is among China’s leading medical institutions. With two sprawling campuses, a faculty of over 4,600, and a vibrant student body of nearly 15,000, the university has grown into a prominent center of medical education and research. Its decision to honor Prof. Choudhary marks the first instance of such a tribute to a Pakistani scientist, underscoring the respect and esteem with which his contributions are viewed in China and beyond.

Prof. Choudhary’s work is a model of visionary science and diplomacy. His leadership in establishing Sino-Pak research centers has been critical in promoting projects that bring together Chinese and Pakistani scientists, bridging gaps through shared knowledge and ambition. His accolades, from the Mustafa (PBUH) Prize to China’s Friendship Award and Pakistan’s Hilal-i-Imtiaz, speak to his influence across continents and enduring impact in chemistry and collaborative international research. As Vice President of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) for Central & South Asia, Prof. Choudhary has continually advocated for scientific excellence, particularly within developing nations.

According to Prof. Dr. Muhammad Mukhtar, Vice Chancellor of the National Skills University Islamabad, establishing this research facility is an investment in scientific infrastructure and a beacon of hope for a collaborative future for young emerging scientists and scholars. It is an emblem of the shared aspirations between China and Pakistan for a future marked by joint research and development. In a world marked by frequent international tensions, this building stands as a symbol of diplomacy and scientific partnership, a reminder of the power of knowledge to unite and the necessity of collaboration to address global challenges.
