From its humble beginnings as the Balak Ram Medical College in 1942, a modest institution with just 50 students, Fatima Jinnah Medical University Lahore, Pakistan has undergone a remarkable transformation. Today, it stands as a shining example of the power of vision, resilience, and pioneering spirit, a full-fledged medical university that anchors a network of affiliated hospitals and specialized schools.
On July 1, 2015, the institution underwent a significant transformation, evolving from a college to a full-fledged medical university. This change, more than just a shift in title, marked the beginning of a new, ambitious era. FJMU now serves as the hub for a network of affiliated hospitals and specialized schools. Its educational reach extends to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (954 beds), Government Teaching Hospital Shahdara (200 beds), and Mozang Hospital (50 beds), as well as nursing colleges and a paramedical school. All these entities work in harmony to provide education and healthcare services.
Academics at Fatima Jinnah Medical University have flourished, with the university now offering postgraduate programs across 19 specialties. Approximately 430 residents are enrolled in CPSP and MD/MS tracks, and M.Phil. programs in ten specialties are also underway. The university's commitment to academic excellence further demonstrates its plans to introduce more offerings, including Ph.D. programs.
Prof. Khalid Masud Gondal — Leading with Grace, Skill, and Vision
The current Vice Chancellor of this University is Professor Khalid Masud Gondal, a celebrated figure who brings both heart and rigor to the role. A distinguished surgeon and educator, he has received honors like the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz and Pride of Performance and holds a Ph.D. in Medical Education.
Since assuming the role of Vice Chancellor in July 2022, Professor Khalid Masud Gondal has brought a rich legacy and a vision to Fatima Jinnah Medical University. His leadership, is focused on nurturing FJMU into a world-class medical institution. His aspirations to raise the university's global rankings and intensify its research collaborations instill a sense of optimism about the university's future.
According to the editor-in-chief of the HunarNama, under the thoughtful leadership of Professor Khalid Masud Gondal, FJMU is not just keeping pace with the evolving world of medicine; it is setting new standards.
