In response to the ongoing and devastating floods that are severely impacting communities nationwide, the Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC) organized a high-level coordination meeting on Thursday September 18, 225. This meeting underscored the urgent role of academia in addressing one of Pakistan’s most pressing crises.

Chaired by Prof. Dr. Iqrar Ahmad Khan (HI, SI), Chairperson of the PHEC, the session gathered vice chancellors and senior representatives from both public and private universities. Their collective aim: to synchronize relief efforts, safeguard education continuity, and confront the growing health challenges emerging in flood-affected regions.

The meeting underscored a comprehensive, multi-pronged strategy. Universities committed to expanding shelter facilities, providing clean water and food supplies, and delivering critical medical services to displaced families. Medical universities pledged to run joint medical camps, while engineering institutions promised to contribute their expertise to design resilient infrastructure solutions for vulnerable areas.

Recognizing the often-overlooked psychological trauma, the meeting outlined comprehensive plans for counseling services and community-based support. This emphasis on holistic relief work aims to ensure that every aspect of the affected families' well-being is addressed, making them feel cared for and not alone in their struggle.

To further support students directly impacted by the floods, universities announced the establishment of collection centers for essential goods, emergency scholarships, and temporary hostel accommodations. Several institutions highlighted their ongoing initiatives, from rehabilitation projects to academic bridging programs to keep displaced students connected to their education.

In a joint statement, university leaders reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to “stand shoulder to shoulder” with disaster-hit communities. This commitment signals that Pakistan’s higher education sector is not just an academic force, but a steadfast pillar of resilience in national emergencies.

“The solidarity we are witnessing today,” Dr. Khan noted, “is a testament to the strength of our universities, not only as centers of learning but as frontline contributors to the country’s well-being.”
